It’s a tasty clash as Argentina have decided to actually start playing and winning. It was unfortunate that Costa Rica suffered the brunt of a resurgent Argentina. The win was never in doubt but Argentina went beyond expectations and turned on the skill to book their quarterfinal place.

Plaudits are headed Sergio Aguero’s way as he was the hero of the match with his brace of goals helping secure a 3-0 victory for Sergio Batista's under-pressure gang, and ensure they continue in the Copa America 2011 as Group A runners-up.

Argentina weren’t alone in their Group Stage problems. Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez knew that qualification was far from a done deal ahead of their final group match with Mexico. Like Argentina they had just two draws ahead of their do-or-die match. While Mexico had done nothing but lose in their two previous Copa Games (2-1 to Chile and 1-0 to Peru), had Uruguay failed to win against Mexico they would have been third in the group and in need of the back door to progress to the quarterfinals (as Peru did by being the best team with a third place finish) .

But Uruguay made no mistakes against Mexico defeating them 1-0 (right winner, wrong score by yours truly)at the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata and progressed through to the last eight, where countrywide baby name of the week Alvaro Pereira was the hero of the (quarter) hour. If Mexico were second favourites before the match they certainly didn’t improve their odds after the goal. In fact the game was 24 minutes old before Mexico registered their first real chance, when Giovani dos Santos broke free down the left flank and took a decent shot on the Uruguayan goal forcing a save from Fernando Muslera, who had so far been a spectator in the match.
